The East Midlands Centre for Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation at Warwick Lodge Information for families and carers

The East Midlands Centre for Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation at Warwick Lodge is situated in Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. The centre was opened to enable patients with acquired brain injuries, behavioural, cognitive, and physical disabilities, from all over the country to receive high quality rehabilitation services. Most, but not all of our patients require high levels of care and to ensure we deliver high quality care and treatment we have lots of experienced staff working in the unit 24 hours per day.

In most cases, a Health Care Trust or Social Services Department will have referred your family member to The East Midlands Centre for Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation and unless it is an emergency, your family member will have been visited by some of our senior staff where your family member is in hospital or where they live now. You are also welcome to visit the centre and to ask any questions that you may have.

Those who make referrals are issued with an information pack and are encouraged to visit before continuing with the admission procedure. Your family member is also given information about the treatment they are likely to receive. Each referral is given careful consideration after the initial assessment by the hospital's assessment team and depending on vacancies; a decision is given as quickly as possible. Where there is no current vacancy, it is possible to place your family member on a waiting list.

Please be reassured that all our patients are made aware that they can expect to be treated with respect and dignity according to their individual needs and wishes.

Number of Places and for Whom

The East Midlands Centre for Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation is an independent hospital and aims to provide care and treatment in appropriate surroundings for 15 people of both sexes over the age of 18. All patients must have a brain injury, will present with challenging behaviour and may have other cognitive and physical disabilities. Some patients may be subject to detention within the remit of the Mental Health Act.

Staffing

In addition to the registered manager, the hospital employs a deputy manager, 10 first level nurses, 26 rehabilitation assistants, 1 general assistant, 2 chefs, 2 kitchen assistants, 3 domestics and a secretary. There are always nursing and care staff on duty. Male and female staff are employed to offer the most appropriate support possible.

The hospital is fully committed to staff learning and development. The manager, Mrs Jacquie Owen is a registered general nurse and has extensive experience of working in brain injury hospitals. Jacquie is a nurse lecturer and practice educator, and spends time teaching staff at the centre how to meet the needs of people with brain injuries. You are welcome to make an appointment at any time with Jacquie, to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have about the care of your family member.

Your family member will have a named nurse and key worker, they will identify themselves to you shortly after your family member has been admitted. Named nurses are registered nurses and will be responsible for planning the care/treatment programme for your family member.

Key workers are rehabilitation assistants and are responsible for making sure that your family member has everything they need to enable them to engage in their rehabilitation programme. This includes, making sure that they have sufficient toiletries, that clothes are looked after, helping to personalise bedrooms and will help your family member to keep in contact with you and other significant people in their lives. Additionally our rehabilitation assistants will be involved in the day to day therapy and treatment programmes either performing these individually or in conjunction with a member of our nursing or therapy team.

Assessment

After admission the first 12 weeks will be a period of settling in, and of us getting to know your family member, including carrying out many different types of assessment. These assessments may be carried out by nurses, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists and a general practitioner. The results of these assessments may be shared with you at formal reviews, if your family member agrees and wishes you to attend.

Following this assessment period, detailed care and treatment programmes and plans will be drawn up, always in consultation with your family member. We can share these with you, if your family member wishes us to do so. At regular intervals this care plan is reviewed and progress recorded.

The first review will take place 12 weeks after admission, and regularly thereafter. You may be invited to attend this review, if your family member wishes for this to be the case. The review will be attended by all members of our team who have been working with your family member, as well as people from the statutory agencies involved, such as case managers and social workers.
