Acquired Brain Injury & Behavioural rehabilitation
East Midlands Centre for Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation at Warwick Lodge
Referrals accepted from 8th March 2010
Opening week commencing 7th June 2010
The East Midlands Centre for Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation at Warwick Lodge is situated in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. The centre accommodates fifteen people and provides psychiatric treatment, specialist rehabilitation and support to people who have behavioural and psychiatric disorders caused by a brain injury. The centre accepts both men and women over the age of eighteen whether or not they have an associated physical disability.
For over twenty years Castlebeck have successfully supported people with complex neurobehavioural disorders associated with developmental disability. The company ethos has been to combine positive practices in behavioural support with a broad range of clinical treatments in a carefully crafted milieu. It is now directing that approach to the cognitive, behavioural and social rehabilitation of people with brain injury.
We are able to care for people with long term conditions and we expect that many patients referred to the centre will have enduring behavioural difficulties and some may have undergone some form of cognitive and physical rehabilitation prior to referral.
The centre accepts patients from other psychiatric services, acute hospital trusts in the recovery period following brain injury, other brain injury services, as well as the criminal justice system. The centre is an independent hospital and accepts patients currently detained under the Mental Health Act. The centre welcomes referrals from psychiatrists, case managers, acute services, solicitors and psychologists.
People with physical needs such as tracheostomy care, PEG care and wheelchair users are all able to be supported in the service.
Treatment/Care Plans
Patients are carefully assessed prior to admission to ensure that the centre can meet their needs. Referrers are asked to complete a comprehensive referral document to facilitate the process and the centre undertakes to respond quickly to any referral request.
The initial assessment period is twelve weeks. During this period patients undergo a range of nursing, psychological and psychiatric assessments designed to clarify the nature and extent of the behaviour disorder, including its mediators and ecological significance, together with any associated psychiatric or neurological condition.
Person centred planning is an important part of our approach to rehabilitation. Patients are directly involved in the design and delivery of their rehabilitation plans which encourages ownership of the process and facilitates recovery.
Family involvement is encouraged in the treatment planning process and we seek to maintain links with previous services where this is desired and appropriate.
Specialist Staff Team
Staff are recruited for their knowledge and experience in the field of brain injury. The nursing team comprises of a mixture of registered general and mental health nurses. We also take the view that skills, or the desire to acquire them and a positive enabling approach are more important to effective nursing in this field.
Supporting the nursing staff is a multi-professional team including a consultant psychiatrist, consultant psychologist, speech and language therapist, occupational therapist and physiotherapist.
