New service increases care pathway at New Hall

A new low secure mental health service at New Hall Independent Hospital in North Wales is set to offer a more extensive care pathway for patients, as well as giving them the chance to be treated closer to home.

The hospital, near Wrexham, offers its 25 male patients a therapeutic environment and programme of treatment in a calm and tranquil setting in extensive, private grounds. It specialises in the care and treatment of individuals with a functional mental illness and or complex needs.

Operationally, New Hall is currently split into three separate ward-based areas “ these comprise of a controlled access rehabilitation ward with intensive nursing support, two open intensive rehabilitation wards one of which incorporates a 2 bed pre-discharge annexe which provides a domestic setting for patients who will be discharged into supported living style services.

The low secure unit, which will have 12 beds, will enable men who may be currently being treated outside the area, or indeed outside of Wales, to move closer to home to continue their treatment. Patients will be able to step down into the service from medium secure services elsewhere, or indeed, step-up into the service if clinically appropriate.

More than 40 new jobs are set to be created through the expansion of the hospital.

New Hall Independent Hospital, part of the MHC group, opened more than 10 years ago.

New Hall Manager Anna Murphy said: “These new beds will increase the care pathway available at New Hall, increasingly stability for patients and meeting a real need in the North Wales area. Currently there are many men who are having to be treated far from their homes and their families, friends and familiar surroundings. This development will offer the chance for them to receive high quality and effective, outcome focused therapy and treatment, in a high quality environment.”

An investment of more than £1m will turn the building into a state of the art new service.

Anna said: “It’s a very exciting time for New Hall and the development is sure to create many local jobs and bring investment into the area.”

MHC is one of Wales’ longest established specialist healthcare providers for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems.

Lee Reed, Managing Director of MHC, which is part of the Castlebeck group of specialist healthcare companies, said: “The new service will increase the clinical pathway available to patients and compliment rather than compete with local NHS services whilst giving those commissioning placements a more local alternative to placing in England and an opportunity to bring those currently placed outside of North Wales back home.

“MHC is one of the largest employers in Wales and in this difficult economic climate we’re pleased to bring the opportunity for new jobs and increased investment in the local community.”
