Newbus Grange

Newbus Grange is an autism specific independent hospital which provides support for people with a learning disability who are on the autistic spectrum and who challenge services.

Staff specialise in the assessment, support, intervention and rehabilitation of adults, including those liable to be detained under The Mental Health Act 1983.

Newbus Grange provides a safe and structured environment for the delivery of dedicated support for people with autistic spectrum disorders. This includes:

  • 24-hour access to Autism practitioners and specialist nursing staff
  • Psychiatry, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language Therapy
  • Communications co-ordinators who use alternative communications techniques (e.g. TEACCH) and Pictorial systems (e.g. PECs)

Castlebeck’s activities programme provides a system of support to enable people to structure their time, build relationships and establish a balance between work, self care and leisure. Individual plans are developed with each person to include structured activity with a particular focus on sensory issues, social groups – interaction/communication and diet/exercise.

All bedrooms at Newbus Grange are en-suite and people are encouraged to individualise their own rooms, if they wish to. Living areas are welcoming and include homely lounges and dining rooms.

Situated in an idyllic and quiet semi-rural location near Hurworth village, three miles from Darlington, County Durham, Newbus Grange is a large Grade II listed property renovated to a very high standard, retaining many of its original features.

Patients at Newbus Grange enjoy varied activities including use of a sensory room, use of community based facilities and use of the outdoor features such as the sensory garden and trim trail.
